Journey through the history and work of Ludovico Ariosto

The Rocca Ariostesca (Ariosto Fortress) in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana represents the beating heart of this charming Tuscan village. Located in the central Piazza Umberto I, the fortification owes its name to the famous poet Ludovico Ariosto, who stayed there between 1522 and 1525 during his tenure as governor of the Este province of Garfagnana.

The history of the Fortress dates back to the 10th century, when a small stronghold was already on site. The original structure, however, dates back to the 12th century, and underwent various modifications over the following centuries. During the 13th century, the fortress was enlarged, and in the 14th century, Castruccio Castracani expanded the walls of the village. A characteristic feature of the Fortress is the central tower, built at the behest of Paolo Guinigi and adorned with a civic clock. In 1675 the terrace overlooking the square was added, coinciding with the opening of the monumental arch leading to the town center.

Throughout the 20th century, the Fortress played several roles: municipal seat until World War II, it suffered significant damage from bombing in 1944. Later, it was restored and used to house public offices. Today, the Rocca Ariostesca houses the Palace of Atlas (Palazzo di Atlante), a museum dedicated to Ludovico Ariosto, one of the most famous and influential authors of the Renaissance.

The Palace of Atlas offers a unique experience to visitors, combining contemporary art with the tradition and history of Garfagnana. Here it is possible to immerse yourself in the poet's home and experience a multimedia and scenic artwork in the bell tower. This permanent installation transports visitors to the first two episodes of Orlando Furioso (The Frenzy of Orlando) - Follia d'Orlando and Astolfo sulla Luna - creating a connection between the territory and Ariosto's poem.

The Bell Tower represents the beginning of a larger museum tour that will offer, in the coming years, a complete experience of Orlando Furioso.

The Rocca Ariostesca in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is a place that combines past and present, paying homage to the greatness of Ludovico Ariosto and the rich cultural heritage of the area. Visiting it is an experience that allows you to immerse yourself in history and art, and to experience the charm of one of the most important literary works in the Italian tradition.
