In front of the Palazzo Comunale in Montopoli Val d’Arno the beautiful Tower of San Matteo climbs into the sky. It was built in 1431 by Neri Capponi, who had been dispatched by the Florentine Republic to bolster the defences on the west side of the fort. The ancient castle was destroyed in 1944, and the old crenellated tower, which is all that remains of it, has become a symbol of Montopoli.
It forms part of the Montopolese group of museums and is extremely popular as a wedding venue.
