A place that testifies to the city’s history

The Biblioteca della Ghisa (Cast Iron Library) represents a significant cultural venue in the city of Follonica, established in 1970 after the transformation of what was once an industrial complex into a hub dedicated to knowledge and reading. Originally known as the “Forno Quadrato” (“Square Furnace”), the building was part of the Royal Imperial Foundries and was instrumental in smelting metals until 1960.

Located in the former Ilva Park, opposite the MAGMA Museum, the Library has rich documentary holdings consisting of some 156,000 volumes, earning the title of the leading library in the province in terms of the extent of the material preserved within. In addition to valuable literary works, the building also preserves evidence of the historic cast iron manufacture, keeping the region’s industrial history alive.

The Biblioteca della Ghisa is actively involved in promoting culture among youngsters, offering interactive workshops, lively readings and performances to stimulate interest and a love of knowledge from an early age.
