The majestic fortress overlooking eastern Lunigiana

The Castle of Verrucola, with its imposing size, is a valuable example of Medieval architecture. Located in the territory of Fivizzano, in a strategic position between the Mommio stream and the Collegnago channel, it controlled the various passes of eastern Lunigiana towards the plains of Reggio Emilia and Modena.

Reached the present day in good condition, it consists of 3 cores: the square keep, a typical medieval tower house and the oldest core, the rectangular-shaped tower, equipped with beccatelli (stone corbels), and the big central square tower, which retains inside it the overlapping of three large halls supported by a single imposing octagonal column located in the so-called hall of arms on the ground floor.
Leaning against the castle is the military church with the loggia with arches made of pietra serena.

This fascinating fortress was owned by several important families: the Bosi, the Malaspina and the Spinetta, who left their feud to the Republic of Florence. Later, due to a violent earthquake, the castle went through a slow decline until 1977, when it was bought by sculptor Pietro Cascella, who brought it back to its former magnificence.
