The Chestnut Ecomuseum in Ortignano Raggiolo, part of the Ecomuseum of Casentino, was founded thanks to bond between the people living in the Teggiana Valley and the landscape where, thanks to man’s hard work, chestnuts have become a domestic plant, an indispensable resource for nutrition in the lives of the area’s locals.
The museum is dedicated to chestnut harvesting and its use in cuisine. The first section is devoted to harvesting tools, followed by a focus on drying techniques and extracting the chestnuts, while the final section showcases its use in homes, primarily for making dishes with chestnut flour.
Visitors move from the forest to the drying roomand the mill, before arriving in the museum and ending in the chestnut workshop, where children can experiment with the materials they saw during their visit.
