In the heart of Chianti, among hills and ancient villages, an unspoiled forest of oaks, holm oaks and chestnut trees is home to the Chianti Sculpture Park, a very special open-air museum in Pievasciata, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga.
Here one can admire contemporary installations and sculptures by international artists from five continents. Each individual sculpture is site-specific, that is, it was created specifically by the artist after visiting the forest for the place where it is installed, so that there is a perfect marriage between the works and the trees, sounds, colors, light and every other element of the forest.
The main feature of the park is that the work of man does not aim to overpower nature, but to complement and enhance it, creating a magical experience between art and nature. The materials used range from bronze to iron, granite to marble, glass to neon. The exhibition route winds through the forest for about a kilometer where sculptures such as a glass labyrinth, a bright neon rainbow or the majestic keel of a stone ship can be seen. An amphitheater has been created inside, which hosts a full calendar of performances and concerts in July and August.
In the old Fornace di Pievasciata, a few kilometers from the park, are other installations and an art gallery displaying small-scale sculptures are visible, often also by the same artists in the park.
