Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist in Monsagrati
A church remembered since Lombard times
The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist in Monsagrati in Pescaglia, is dedicated to Saints Reparata and John. Its presence is attested as far back as the Lombard period, however, written records speak of a reconstruction in the year 1102 on the same hill, which was followed by the abandonment of the older building. At this stage a bell tower was added, north of the church. With the latest renovations, the crenellated crowning and two clocks on the bell tower were added.
Overall, the parish church is in Romanesque style, with simple, linear architecture. The structure, in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves and a semicircular apse, has a few entrances on the sides and a major portal on the facade. Inside, the tabernacle dates from the 15th century and is coeval with the restorations by Benedetto Nobili. The addition of the vaults and windows along the nave, however, is from the 17th century.
