Church of San Pietro in Casalguidi
In a village near Serravalle Pistoiese, there’s a historic place of worship that conserves a priceless organ
The Church of San Pietro is located in Casalguidi, a village in the municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese, on the slopes of Montalbano, and is a historic place of worship documented as early as the 12th century.
The parish church conserves a priceless painting by Leonardo Malatesta depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter, Sebastian, Cosmas, Sylvester and a young John the Baptist (1518). In addition to other works of important artistic value, including an altarpiece by Alessio Gimignani and frescoes by Pietro Ulivi, the church vaunts a wooden crucifix that’s brought out for the procession on Holy Friday during the Festa Bella, which takes place every three years and dates to the 1600s.
Above the main entrance, placed on a painted wooden choir, is an Agati Tronci Organ from 1898, which boats 27 cuspate pipes. The side capitals and triangular tympanum with two pinnacles topped by a pair of angels in the round give the instrument a majestic appearance, making it look like a ciborium.
