The old church in the heart of the town was entirely reconstructed in the 19th century

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Montescudaio is found in the heart of the town, surrounded by oak trees. Originally it was called the Church of Sant’Andrea in Castello, then in 1416 it inherited the title of the supressed female monastery named after the Virgin Mary.

The earthquake that destroyed the upper part of the town in 1846, also destroyed the church. The new church was constructed in the years between 1854 and 1857. It was larger than previously, with a Latin cross floor plan and facing west, it preceded a large staircase.

Inside you can find an 18th century statue in painted marble, depicting Saint Francesco di Paola, and a canvas with the Annunciation, attributed to the Venetian School of the 17th century.
