The best place to shop in the city
Corso Carducci in Grosseto is named after the great poet Giosuè Carducci and is the perfect place for evening strolls and shopping thanks to the numerous stores dotting the street.
It connects piazza Dante to Porta Nuova and follows a stretch of the ancient via Aurelia, which once passed through the historic centre.
The buildings on the street were rebuilt at the end of the 19th century as part of a beautification project and to allow for the old road to be enlarged.
Corso Carducci is home to the oldest religious building in the city, the Church of San Pietro. Documented as early as 1118, it’s has undergone many changes and renovations over the centuries.
Walking down the street, it’s easy to note the elegant Liberty-style buildings, like Palazzo Pallini and Palazzo Tognetti. There are also several Neoclassical-style buildings. Palazzo Arisoti is one of these, while the former Banca d’Italia, restored in the early 20th century, has a typical Neoclassical façade with an added decoration of a shell in the Liberty style.
