An immersive journey among Etruscans and wine

The area of San Germano, known for its necropolis, constitutes significant evidence of ancient Vetulonia in the northern area. This settlement, active from the 7th century BC to the 1st century AD, probably flourished because of the commercial control and agricultural resources in the area. The archaeological area of San Germano is located in Gavorrano and contains tumulus tombs dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. In addition, there is a guided trail through the Mediterranean scrub that, thanks to QR codes, shows Etruscan funerary architecture.

The Rocca di Frassinello documentation center is a continuation of the proposed visit to the Etruscan necropolis of San Germano. The common thread of the center is wine, an element that links modern viticulture to the Etruscan civilization.

In the Rocca di Frassinello documentation center, the visitor can make a journey into the past: starting from the cellar built by Renzo Piano with barrels arranged in such a way to remind of a Roman amphitheater, the experience can continue with a wine tasting served as in Etruscan times, that is, with the addition of spices; culminating with other tastings of wines produced at the winery.

The museum tour thus exhibits objects illustrating the customs and traditions of the Etruscans, with a focus on wine consumption and its social role. The goal is to link modern viticulture to ancient Etruscan civilization, by highlighting the connection with wine that thrived on these lands more than 2500 years ago. The many wine-related vessels found in burials represent not only a central element in the representation of the deceased, but also testify to the trades, local productions, exchange of aristocratic gifts and convivial practices throughout time.
