Foresiana Art Gallery in Portoferraio

The Foresiana Art Gallery in Portoferraio was founded in 1914 thanks to the donation of Mario Foresi, an intellectual who, picking up the legacy of his father Raffaello and uncle Alessandro, composed a valuable collection of paintings, prints, furniture and drawings.

The museum was first opened to the public in 1924 and was initially set up in the Municipal Palace of Portoferraio. However, the collection is currently located in the premises of the historic De Laugier barracks, where it has been housed since 1991.

The exhibition, divided into twelve thematic areas, opens with a group of portraits of the Foresi family and then continues with images of people and places on Elba Island. Here, at the beginning of this series, the famous portrait of Mago Chiò by Telemaco Signorini (1835-1901), an exponent of the Macchiaioli, stands out.

The second room is devoted to nineteenth-century painting, ranging from Orientalism to caricature to portraiture. In the other rooms, however, one can admire numerous works depicting views of Italian cities, mythological episodes and copies of Renaissance paintings.
