The Giosué Carducci Archival Museum, located within the town hall of Castagneto Carducci, was opened during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the poet’s death. The museum was then rennovated in 2007 with an exhibition on the occasion of the centenary of his death. Publications by Carducci, including books and magazines, and iconographic material, including photographs, of people and locations connected to Carducci are exhibited in dedicated display cases, as well as drafts of his poetry about the local territory.
The museum explores the major events of his poetic career, in particular those linked to the sounds and smells of the Pisan Maremma that inspired such poems as “Davanti San Guido”, “Traversando la Maremma Toscana” and “San Martino”; simple and genuine poetry for which Carducci became known as a poet of nature. His works constantly evoke the rural and agricultural countryside of Bolgheri and Castagneto, both places where the poet resided during the first few years of his life and where he returned for brief periods when he was already an established and celebrated poet.
