The Municipal Historical Archives of Massa e Cozzile safeguards over 3,400 documents dating from 1299 to 1865, organized into three separate archives: the Municipal, the Chancery Communications and Civil Justice, established in Massa by appointment of the Podestà (Chief Magistrate) of Buggiano.
The inventory is divided into six sections plus an appendix.
The first four list the records of the municipal administration from its inception to the Napoleonic period, dating from 1808 to 1814, then through to the reconstitution of the community between 1814 to 1865.
The fifth section includes documents from the Chancery of Buggiano following the suppression of the Autonomous Chancery of Massa e Cozzile in 1784.
Finally, the last section contains documents from the local justice appointed by the Podestà of Buggiano from 1419 and some documents of the autonomous Podestà between 1414 and 1419 along with some deeds of the Autonomous Podestà of Massa e Cozzile, covering the years 1414–1419.
The post-unification archive bears witness to the transformation of the area, from the economic growth of the plains to the crisis of the rural world, offering a detailed picture of the society of the time.
Also present are the archives of local associations, such as the Agricultural and Workers’ Society along with various lay works.
In addition to official documents, also preserved are printed materials, newspaper clippings, small objects, two framed paintings listing the Agricultural and Workers’ Society members as well as sheet music of the local band, demonstrating the rich historical memory of the community.
