Gifted in 1561 to Vasari by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici

House Vasari is located in Florence, in Borgo Santa Croce, and is the very home where the master lived for many years and died in 1574. The house was given to Vasari in 1561 by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici in gratitude for his services and to facilitate his work in the nearby basilica of Santa Croce.

Just as he had done in his native home in Arezzo, Vasari frescoed the different rooms - around 1572 -with representations having as their theme the arts and the primacy of painting, in the form of stories from Pliny's writings, allegorical images and portraits of artists, such as Leonardo and Michelangelo, later enriching the house with a notable collection of paintings by his contemporaries.

Of the house, which also had an adjoining workshop, today only the Great Hall can be admired, a 55-square-meter room restored to its former glory by careful restoration, testifying to the decorative richness of the residence.
