The “Italo Bolano” Open Air Museum is a journey through contemporary art located in Portoferraio in the valley of San Martino.
The museum-park was created by artist Italo Bolano from Elba in 1964 in collaboration with internationally renowned artists, and is made up of 20 monumental ceramics arranged carefully in a beautiful park that has around 10,000 square meters of Mediterranean plants.
Bolano was born in Portoferraio in 1936. His art has moved over the years from early figurative expressionism to abstract expressionism, and his works, in addition to the park, can be found scattered in various Italian cities. In 2021, following the artist's passing, a Foundation dedicated to him was established and renovations are underway to make the museum more usable for tourism and educational training.
In the park there is also a painting and graphic arts gallery, a ceramics gallery, an open-air theater and several contemporary art workshops, where audience and artists can meet.
