Masso Leopoldino

A panoramic terrace with atmosphere and an ancient history

The Masso Leopoldino is one of the most distinctive elements of Sorano, the village carved into the tuff in the heart of Maremma.
The Masso is a rock that exemplifies the integration of nature and architecture: it stands in the center of the village and has always been used for its strategic and defensive qualities.

Thanks to Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Lorraine, between 1820 and 1822, after a serious accident that caused huge blocks of tuff to dislodge from the top, the summit was smoothed and consolidated. A huge terrace was built on this occasion and a crenellated tower with a bell and clock was erected on the southern end.

The work was completed by Grand Duke Leopold II, which is why the rock was given this name.
Today there is a splendid panoramic terrace on the top of the Masso, overlooking Sorano, and it can be reached via a steep flight of steps
