The Alberti Gallery is located in the historic centre of Prato in the building from which it takes its name, the “Casone degli Alberti”, the historic seat of the Cassa di Risparmio e Depositi di Prato. The palace maintains the late 15th-century appearance of the renovation probably wanted by the wealthy Bardi family from Vernio, whose coat of arms is still visible on the exterior of the building.
The collection of the Palazzo Alberti Gallery consists of 142 works, 90 of which are on display, by important artists such as Caravaggio, Giovanni Bellini and Filippo Lippi. Among the most valuable artworks is the Crucifix in the Jewish cemetery (1490-1502) by Giovanni Bellini, the Coronation of Thorns (1602-1603) by Caravaggio, the Madonna with child (c. 1436) by Filippo Lippi, works by Puccio by Simone, Bronzino, Santi di Tito, Poppi, as well as numerous prestigious works of the Florentine 17th century and a large number of sculptures by Lorenzo Bartolini, an artist from Prato who was active in the early-mid 19th century.
The Palazzo degli Alberti is now also home to the Intesa Sanpaolo branch.
