Built between 1367 and 1389, the Palazzo Pretorio is located in front of the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall), having always been the seat of the Court of Pistoia. The building was expanded in the first half of the 19ᵗʰ century while preserving many elements of the original structure. The stone façade features two orders of bifora windows, of which the central five are in Gothic style, date back to the original layout.
Of particular interest is the frescoed courtyard, which preserves a seat with three tiers of steps and the 14ᵗʰ-century bench where justice was once administered. In the 15ᵗʰ century, the ceiling was adorned with frescoes, to which the coats of arms of the Podestà (Chief Magistrate), Captains and Magistrates of Pistoia were later added.
The courtyard is now often the site of exhibitions and cultural initiatives.
