The ancient center of the Lombard city in Pistoia

Piazza La Sala, the ancient center of the Lombard city, became the epicenter of Pistoia’s manufacturing and commercial activities at the time of Medieval communes. It is the Opera di San Jacopo that gives impetus and controls the entire organization of the market, through the granting of operating permits and the legalization of merchant logs. In 1453, the Opera embellished the Piazza by embellishing the well, which dates back to the Middle Ages, with a white and green marble parapet and by a stone lion, from which the name Pozzo del Leoncino (Well of the Little Lion) derives.

Even today, the Piazza is characterized by the presence of wooden counters, stone pallets and awnings that once belonged to the small merchant stalls and now delineate the fruit and vegetable market.

The Piazza is connected to the Piazzetta degli Ortaggi, housing the bronze sculptural group Giro del Sole (1994) by Pistoia artist Roberto Barni.

In recent years, Piazza La Sala and Piazzetta degli Ortaggi have become the heart of Pistoia’s evenings and nightlife, abuzz with many typical bars, clubs and restaurants.
