Known since Roman times, the San Carlo spring owes its name to St. Charles Borromeo, a bishop from Milan who lived in the 16th century and who, suffering from kidney stones and finding himself passing through Massa, drank the water from its hot springs, drawing excellent benefits from it.
The Thermal Park includes a path through the greenery, with beautiful historical fountains, fragrant vegetable gardens and springs from which the thermal water flows and is used for mineral water treatments.
The waters of the San Carlo Spring, also known as Acqua Aurelia, come from the Apuan Alps, a UNESCO World Heritage Park, and flow from the spring at a temperature of 12.8°C (55°F). Because of its healing properties, the Acqua San Carlo water has a detoxifying action on tissues and is recommended for the treatment of urinary and gastrointestinal disorders, kidney stones and digestive, metabolic and gynecological problems. Its balance of sodium and potassium thus helps purify the body and improves skin and tissue health.
The San Carlo Terme Thermal Park, which opened in 2017, after a three-year renovation, is open to the public in the summertime and has a restaurant, which offers fine land and sea cuisine, with typical traditional Sardinian and Tuscan dishes.
