The San Francesco Museum of Sacred Art in Greve in Chianti is housed in the historic convent of San Francesco, built in the 1400s, and conserves an important collection of paintings, sculptures, vestments and sacred décor from the 13th to 19th centuries, as well as an important archeological section.
Among the works on display are the large figures in polychrome terracotta of the Lamentation of Christ from the workshop of Baccio da Montelupo, as well as the 14th-century Annunciation coming from the Church of Santa Croce in Greve, a marble low-relief from the 1500s depicting St. Francis, once housed in the Church of San Pietro in Sillano, a sculpture of the Madonna and Child in painted plaster, attributed to Nanni di Bartolo, and a Madonnna and Child with Saints Bartholomew and Francis by Francesco Granacci, coming from the Church of Santa Maria in Cintoia.
Finally, the museum’s archeological section holds artefacts from the Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods that were discovered during digs in the territory.
