The San Giovanni Thermal Springs, opposite the Darsena Medicea (Medici Dock) in Portoferraio on the Island of Elba, stands on a 5-hectare marsh basin from which silt with high therapeutic potential is extracted, making this modern thermal establishment an important Thalassotherapy Center at the Italian and European level.
In the 1950s, several doctors from Elba began to study the marshy area of the Antiche Saline, near Portoferraio, where salt was once harvested. When production was abandoned, the sea invaded the land, enriching the mud with iron.
In 1963, the San Giovanni Thermal Springs were opened and it became a successful thermal spa. In the 1990s, seaweed treatments were also introduced.
