In Candalla, a village near Camaiore, you will find an old forge where, for generations, the Barsi brothers have worked with iron. They speak about this metal almost as if it were a family member. The archival documentation attests to the existence of this place from 1808 when it belonged to the Cerù family. At the start of the 20th century, it was bought by the Barsi family who came from lower-Matanna where they already owned a small iron works.
Anybody is welcome to go in and find out a bit about their work. The old hammer is still in operation and the forges are also many years old, a fact that only adds to the acrid smell of the smoke.
