Because of their special chemical composition and remarkable healing properties, the waters of Chitignano are among the most famous in Casentino. In these parts, it was once considered "magical" water. These waters have been known since ancient times, as is shown by the numerous votive bronze statuettes found in the surrounding area.
They were already frequented in the Middle Ages, when there was a significant transit of pilgrims in this area, along the Via Romea in Passo della Calla, and their value was enhanced by the Ubertini family in the second half of the 1600s.
Water currently flows from three springs, all located near the village: Sorgente del Rio, Sorgente Galastri and Sorgente Buca del Tesoro. Around the latter, the municipality has built a well-equipped green area called Parco Buca del Tesoro, where the water can be bottled. Water flows out through three large taps from a push-button fountain powered by an electric pump. A great many people make use of these ferruginous and sulfurous waters because of their beneficial effects (they stimulate digestive functions, cleanse the liver and kidneys and heal skin diseases and gynecological infections).
To reach the Sorgente Buca del Tesoro, set off from the village of Chitignano and turn left before the Church of San Vincenzo Martire, where there is a street in which the ferruginous water is clearly indicated. Go down the road until you find a paved car park on your left, with a green area next to the river. You’re there: equip yourself with water bottles, glass bottles or simply a glass and you too can enjoy the properties of Casentino water.
