The Mining Museum in the Galleria and the Ravi-Marchi Mining Area

In Gavorrano, there's one of the access points to the Colline Metallifere National Park, formed in 2003 to preserve the centuries-old history of metallurgy and mining activities carried out in this area.

Here, there are two mining areas that can be visited: the Parco delle Rocce and the Ravi-Marchi area. In the Parco delle Rocce, you'll find a reception centre and infopoint, and the entrance to the Mining Museum in the Galleria.

The Mining Museum in the Galleria is housed in the space that had the function of storing explosives. The route reveals the different phases of the mining site, and explores the environmental conditions and hard work that went on inside the mine through images, sounds, stories and anecdotes.

From the exit of the museum in the Galleria, you go up to the Teatro delle Rocce: built in a small semicircular quarry carved into the rock at the foot of the large San Rocco quarry, it holds two thousand seats and is a multifunctional space used to host shows, festivals and cultural events.

The second route in the park is at the Ravi-Marchi mining area, an open-air industrial archaeology site where you can visit the surface plants that were put out of use in 1965, illustrating the first processes and treatments of pyrite. There are guided tours (even at night), educational workshops, performances, lectures and conventions.
