Castagneto Carducci and the Ancient Campigliese Way
Easy 12-kilometer trek through an itinerary of unique beauty
From the village, renowned for its intricate history tied to the noble Della Gherardesca family and, more recently, as the place where the poet Giosuè Carducci spent his youth, we will admire the scenic landscapes of the typical seaside countryside, uncovering its celebrated literary connections.
We will follow the medieval route that linked Castagneto to Campiglia Marittima, known as the Ancient Campigliese Way or della Vedetta. Along the way, we will encounter stretches of the original paving and remnants of the old coal miners’ paths. Our walk will take us through areas of remarkable natural beauty, passing through thickets and groves that, at higher elevations, transition into forests of holm oak, turkey oak, downy oak, and chestnut trees.
Our journey will lead to the old Bagnoli aqueduct, built in the mid-19th century by Count Ugolino della Gherardesca. The aqueduct is notable for its two bridges, which once allowed the crossing of watercourses. As we approach the western side, we will be treated to breathtaking views of the Etruscan Coast before arriving at the captivating trail of the historic Castagnetani mills.
The tour concludes in the picturesque medieval village, where we will stroll along its charming cobblestone streets and pause to admire significant landmarks, including the castle, the Propositura di San Lorenzo, and Casa Carducci. Finally, we will savor a magnificent coastal view from the Belvedere.
