Cycling to Lucca in the footsteps of Puccini
A route on a cycle path, along the Serchio river, to admire the landscape that inspired the famous musician
The tour starts at the Montepisano Store in San Giuliano Terme. From here we'll reach the Ciclovia Puccini, a cycle path that runs along the Serchio river towards Ponte a Moriano, one of the last towns in the Lucchesia before entering Garfagnana.
We will take this road up to Lucca, crossing different natural settings along the rapid currents of the Serchio river which, after having traveled many kilometers, goes towards the sea.
Along the way we will cross what many centuries ago was the border between the Pisan Republic and Lucca. Several towers, a large fortress and a castle perched on a hill will teleport us to a distant past that still lives on today. We will continue along the river with its waterfalls and its islands of white stones, until we reach the city of Lucca, where it will be possible to cycle along the 4km elevated path that runs on the ancient city walls. From up there, we'll admire the city.
You can then choose to visit the museum and the birthplace of Puccini, located in the historic center of Lucca.
We will return to Monte Pisano, passing by the Gattaiola vineyards where it will be possible to choose to stop at a local winery and taste the delicious wine sitting among the rows.
Along the path that will lead us back to San Giuliano Terme we will meet several villas and historic residences.
