Discovering Massaciuccoli lake by bicycle
Let's explore together the Chiarone Nature Reserve, the lake and the Roman remains in the nearby archaeological area of Massaciuccoli
From San Giuliano Terme to Massaciuccoli Lake: an easy route to reach the Chiarone Nature Reserve, an oasis of peace and biodiversity known since Roman times, as evidenced by the nearby archaeological area which preserves the remains of the Venulei Family Villa, built at the beginning of the 1st century.
The tour starts at the Montepisano Store in San Giuliano Terme. After a few kilometers on ordinary roads, we'll leave the traffic behind to immerse ourselves in the peace of the “Padule”: the marshy area around Massaciuccoli Lake. Around the lake, we'll proceed towards the Chiarone Reserve, a protected area where we will admire the unique ornithological fauna with the amazing setting of the Apuan Alps on the horizon.
Once at the lake it will be possible to walk on the elevated paths and, thanks to special observation stations, admire the unspoiled habitat without disturbing the animals.
After the walk is over and before returning to San Giuliano Terme, we will take a visit to the archaeological area, with the Villa and its thermal complex. It is located in a panoramic position, and from there you can admire the lake and the coast, as far as the sea.
