Florence: guided tour of the Accademia Gallery
Live an unforgettable experience in one of the most important museums in the world with its timeless masterpieces
The Accademia Gallery was founded along with the Academy of Fine Arts in 1784, thanks to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine, and boasts the world's largest and most important collection of gold-ground paintings, not to mention the Museum of Musical Instruments, a great passion of the Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici. The collection was soon and extraordinarily enriched with sculptures and paintings from convents, monasteries and other religious institutions suppressed first by Pietro Leopoldo and then by Napoleon. But it was in 1872 that the definitive turning point in the history of the complex came when it was decided to move the David of Michelangelo there, removing it from the deterioration due to its original location outdoors, in Piazza della Signoria. The statue was harnessed to a complex wooden cart and ran on rails through the streets of the center to the Academy. The museum was finally inaugurated on July 22, 1882.
