Monterufoli the Villa delle Cento Stanze and Corno al Bufalo
Day tour of the Monterufoli-Caselli nature reserve in the Cecina Valley area
We will explore a trail of remarkable natural value within a special protection area and ecological corridor linking the Tyrrhenian coast, Valdera, and Val di Cecina. This area boasts dense Mediterranean scrub, pristine streams, and rugged mineral outcrops of chalcedony and lignite, the centerpiece of a fascinating mining history.
Our journey will take us through a variety of breathtaking landscapes, starting from the Villa delle Cento Stanze (Villa of the Hundred Rooms), described as “perched on top of a high and grim mountain, amidst immense thickets.” This historic residence, once home to noble families like the Maffei and Della Gherardesca, was central to the exploitation of the region’s vast agro-forestry and mineral resources, including the renowned chalcedony of Monterufoli.
We will follow the Corno al Bufalo Nature Trail, a path distinguished by striking green rock formations and rare botanical species. Along the way, we’ll admire spectacular viewpoints overlooking the wild Linari Creek basin, seek out the elusive yew tree, also known as the Tree of Death, and approach the towering serpentinite cliffs along Trossa Creek.
Climbing the slope, we will discover the scenic valley of the Adio Torrent, traversing a captivating route that showcases all the forest biotypes found in the Reserve, including the stunning Renzano forest. Our adventure culminates at the waterfalls, a tranquil spectacle of cascading waters and natural pools, offering a perfect conclusion to an experience in one of Tuscany's most biodiverse locations.
The tour is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, starting at 9:30 a.m.
