The ramparts of the Walls of Lucca
A city tour above and under Lucca’s defensive Walls
The Walls of Lucca represent a unique reality in the panorama of European architecture and town planning. Built during the Renaissance period, they are today one of the greatest examples of Italian fortification of the period, as well as a large public park of 96 hectares pedestrianised that surrounds and delimits the historical centre. The tree-lined promenade is 4.2 kilometres long and can be walked, run or cycled.
During this tour, you will venture - on a route developed partly above the Walls, partly below - to discover the interiors of some of the bastions restored thanks to the Municipality of Lucca and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.
Visiting them is like entering the 'bowels' of the Walls of Lucca, never actually used for defensive purposes. You will discover the immense and spectacular brick vaults of the galleries, built with the main purpose of hiding the heavy bronze cannons, and you will understand the evolution of military engineering in Italy from the 13th to the 17th century.
