The treasures of the Pavone valley
Exciting hike in the heart of the Alta Val di Cecina
We will discover one of Tuscany's wildest and most spectacular areas in its most hidden and fascinating corners on old tracks and off-road vehicles.
We will start from the charming village of Montecastelli Pisano along an old bumpy track that is now closed, used in the past to transport loads from the copper mine below.
After crossing an area rich in geological and mineralogical history, we will arrive at the ford of the Pavone (peacock) torrent, and then slowly climb towards the imposing Rocca Sillana, an important territorial garrison from the Roman era. This valley is called Valle del Pavone (Peacock valley).
We will visit the characteristic village of San Dalmazio with its narrow alleys and the fascinating Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista in Sillano, before descending along steep tracks of green rocks towards the emerald Pozzo delle Mandrie, where we can stop before the second ford.
The limestone cliffs will impress us as we cross the canyon of the beautiful and little-visited "Buche Fiorentine", an ancient Etruscan hypogea with very high and narrow walls. The last panorama will await us from the top of Montecastelli for the conclusion of a one-of-a-kind experience.
The tour will take place on Sunday, May 25, starting at 9 a.m.
