Tour around Montecatini Val di Cecina

Tours

Hike in the heart of the Alta Val di Cecina among natural and archaeo-mineral landscapes

The hamlet, formerly called Monte Leone, saw several disputes between Pisa and Volterra until it came under the Vicariate of the Val di Cecina based in Pomarance.

Copper mining was practised since Etruscan times and experienced a strong expansion during the 19th century with the Montecatini company, which, after merging with Edison, became a mining giant and Europe's largest copper mine. We will admire its medieval structures by making the circumnavigation before starting the trek through a highly scenic hiking route that will see us reach the area of the Caporciano Mine and then the summit of Poggio La Croce, from which we will enjoy a wide and wonderful panorama.

We will continue our walk arriving in the afternoon in the medieval alleys of the village where we will point out the fascinating military architecture of the Belforti Tower and the 14th-century Church of San Biagio.

The tour will take place on Sunday, February 2, 2025, departing at 10:00 am.
