Trekking to discover the Biancane di Leonina
Historical-naturalistic walking itinerary among the hills, villages and castles in the characteristic area of the Crete Senesi
Iconic loop trek around the Leonina Biancane geosite: earthen reliefs, devoid of vegetation and characterized by a whitish hue, shaped over time by the process of water erosion.
The Leonina Biancane geosite, part of the larger Crete Senesi landscape, is one of the most stunning settings in the region. We will delve into its history and origins through a fascinating geo-trekking experience before reaching the Transitional Site, a monumental stone window created in 1993 by French artist Jean Paul Philippe, offering a perfect spot for incomparable photos.
We will then continue to the charming rural village of Mucigliani, known as the “capital” of the Crete for its panoramic position overlooking the surrounding landscape. Here, we will again admire the remarkable "Site Transitoire," a stone installation where sunlight aligns spectacularly during the summer solstice.
Next, we will venture into the Desert of Accona, walking along the ridges of hills and farmsteads of the Crete, where the view stretches into infinity. This unique landscape will ultimately lead us to the Leonina Castle, an ancient Sienese stronghold whose imposing presence will mark the perfect conclusion to a memorable day.
The trek will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2025, with departure at 9:30 am.
