Volterra's salt and the old railroad
A great itinerary to discover landscape, engineering works and history of salt mining in Volterra
Through an open and panoramic itinerary we will walk on the route of the old rack railway. This route connected Saline with Volterra from 1912 to 1958 through an 8.5-kilometre line. The ascending locomotives had to proceed at the tail of the train, the remains of the railway structure are still visible today, such as small service buildings, bridges and embankments.
We will admire the beautiful scenery of the clay hills with views that reach up to the metalliferous hills. We will go around Poggio Scornello, where we will find the ancient residence of the Inghirami family of Volterra. Finally, we will arrive at the "Moie Vecchie", the whole area is characterized by the exploitation of "salsa" water springs, from which the salt is extracted by evaporating the brine in special boilers.
The tour will take place on Saturday 25th January, starting at 9.30 am.
