Walking on Lucca’s hills
Half-day walking tour in the Piana di Lucca to discover villages, villas and churches
A place where time has stood still: the city of Lucca is only a few kilometres away, but on these hills, you will breathe the air of a remote world.
From the car park, where the excursion begins, you will set off along the asphalt road, usually with little traffic. The route takes you past Renaissance villas, once the summer residences of wealthy silk merchants, and medieval Romanesque churches in white limestone. A small country road will lead you to the first two imposing villas, visible from the outside. You will then return to the main road just to cross the first of the two Romanesque churches: S. Andrea di Gattaiola. You will admire a pleasant and silent landscape, immersed in what looks like a 19th-century landscape painting.
From here you will begin to climb paths through olive groves: oil in this area is a product of excellence that has been exported for centuries. Halfway along you will come across the other church, from where you will have a panoramic view over the plain of Lucca.
On the way back you will pass through a forest of chestnut trees and, before descending, you will have the opportunity to admire some recently built architecture. This is Villa Farfalla: a building in local stone, the brainchild of the Belgian architect Bouquillon. You will finish the route by returning to the cars. A special experience, in the company of an environmental guide, embracing Lucca and its surroundings.
