The Palio dei Rioni is undoubtedly the most emblematic event in Castiglion Fiorentino.
Representatives of the three Rioni - the Terziere di Porta Fiorentina (orange-green), the Rione di Porta Romana (yellow-red) and the Rione Cassero (white-blue) - compete to win the prestigious banner of the Palio.
For 2025, the date is set for Sunday, June 15.
The day begins with Mass celebrated at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio, which is also the spiritual heart of the Palio. At the end of the ceremony, the parish priest blesses the horses and jockeys, a solemn moment rich in tradition.
In the afternoon, around 3 p.m., the impressive Historical Procession comes to life, a parade in which costumed people of the Rioni wear medieval and Renaissance costumes, accompanied by groups of musicians and flag-wavers. The procession starts from Piazza del Municipio and passes through the charming streets of the historic center until it reaches Piazzale Garibaldi.
At 6:45 p.m., the sound of a firecrack signals the imminent start of the competition, a signal that calls everyone to preparation.
At 7 p.m., the horses and jockeys, under the guidance of the Starter, take to the track, ready to start. The race kicks off at the right time, setting up a competition that culminates in the awarding of the Palio to the winning Rione.
Immediately after the race, the square fills with celebrations and choruses of joy.
Beloved by the Castiglion Fiorentino citizens, the horse race is a unique and emotionally charged experience that gives visitors the chance to experience an authentic Tuscan tradition.
The week leading up to the Palio is equally fascinating, as each Rione organizes dinners and events, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and involvement that enriches every visitor's experience.
