The Valley of Nativity Scenes

Folklore

Christmas culture and tradition in the Mid Serchio Valley

Accompanying Christmas traditions in the Mid Serchio Valley is back, from December 7, the 8th edition of “La Valle dei Presepi” (The Valley of Nativity Scenes), the project that highlights the centuries-old tradition of the nativity scene that is an integral part of the popular culture of the area.

An event beloved by citizens and numerous visitors, enlivened again this year by a calendar full of Christmas events that will enliven Christmas in the Mid Valley, along with the numerous nativity scenes set up throughout the territory.

Also on the program is the section dedicated to itinerary proposals, a novelty introduced in the last editions, in which routes are recommended that combine in the same day the visit of several nativity scenes and participation in initiatives in different municipalities.

The first weekend will be dedicated to chocolate, with the traditional Barga in Chocolate event, scheduled for the streets of the historic center on December 7 and 8.

In Bagni di Lucca on Saturday, December 7, in addition to the inauguration of the Valley of Nativity Scenes with many animations, there will be a Walk among the Nativity Scenes in Montefegatesi, the charming village perched above Bagni di Lucca.

Evocative nativity scenes will be set up all around Borgo a Mozzano, and many parties under the Tree will be held as Christmas Eve approaches.

In Pescaglia the Torchlight Procession of Convalle will enliven Saint Stephen's Day.

The festival will continue until January 6, 2025, with the arrival of the Befana, the other great tradition par excellence of this area. An arrival accompanied by songs, gifts, typical sweets and lots of celebrations and music throughout the Valley; in some cases the little woman so beloved by children and others will even descend from the Church Bell Tower!
