The Montepulciano Cyclostorica: four scenic looped routes and a vintage atmosphere for a historical cycling event

Vintage bike and cycling enthusiasts can start preparing for the 2025 edition of Poggi e Buche - La Ciclostorica di Montepulciano, scheduled for Sunday, April 6. Registration is now open for the event that will see participants challenge themselves and discover the territory between Valdichiana Senese and Val d’Orcia.

The four scenic loop routes, to be done strictly in vintage clothing, go from the Montepulciano pass through the territories of Pienza, Monticchiello, Torrita di Siena, San Quirico d’Orcia, Sarteano and Castiglione d’Orcia in an alternation of asphalt and dirt roads:

  • Giro del Pagliaio
A walk accessible to all, covering 26 miles (42 kilometers) with a gain in elevation of 1378 feet (420 meters), leading to Pienza, with final refreshments at Palazzo Massaini.
  • Giro dell’Orto
Minimal physical training is required for the 41-mile (66-kilometer) ride, with 18 miles (29 kilometers) on dirt roads and an elevation gain of 3281 feet (1000 meters), leading to Monticchiello, Pienza and Bagno Vignoni.
  • Giro dell’Aia
A medium route for those who are well trained and want to test themselves over 61 miles (98 kilometers), with 28 miles (45 kilometers) on dirt roads and an elevation gain of 5085 feet (1550 meters) leading to the towns of La Foce, La Rimbecca, Gallina, Bagno Vignoni, Pienza and Torrita di Siena.
  • Poggi e Buche
A longer and more challenging ride, at 76 miles (123 kilometers), half along dirt roads, with an elevation gain of 7054 feet (2150 meters). Designed for those up for an excellent workout, this route promises to repay efforts by embellishing the locations touched upon along the medium route with views of the Val d’Orcia from Castiglioncello del Trinoro.

Participants can get in the mood for the event as early as Saturday, April 5, with a walk through the historic center of Montepulciano, including a visit to and tasting in the wineries (free for those who sign up).

The complete program and registration can be accessed via the event website.
