PGI Cherry of Lari
The Lari cherry is a typical fruit that originates in the Pisan countryside: thanks to its sweet flavor and unique organoleptic characteristics, it is loved and known throughout Tuscany.
The PGI Lari cherry boasts a very ancient history: some documents testify to the presence of this fruit as early as the 16th century.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the cherry, prized by wholesalers and consumers for its goodness and earliness, was sold fresh at the market in major cities - from Livorno to Florence - thus increasing farmers' incomes.
Characteristics
The fruit of the sweet cherry Prunus avium L., a member of the Rosaceae family, has insubstantial to firm and crisp pulp with bright red or dark red shiny peel.
There are several local varieties that enrich the supply and further characterize it.

The PGI Lari cherry is excellent eaten as is as fresh fruit.
Only a small percentage of cherries are intended for processing: in fact, some varieties, characterized by a high sugar content of the pulp and a very thin peel, are also suitable for making preserves and jams.
Every year in June, Lari hosts the Cherry Festival, an event that is part of the local tradition and identity: it takes place over two weekends with a rich program of events ranging from the exhibition of food and wine products to cultural and folkloric events in the streets of the historic center of Lari.
As per tradition, the producer who has been able to obtain from its crops the fruit with the best organoleptic qualities is awarded through the presentation of the coveted Golden Cherry.
