5 reasons to visit San Miniato

City of the truffle, theater and ancient crafts

All things Tuscan concentrated in a single village: San Miniato - and also the nearby countryside - represents all that is beautiful and good in our territory. Along the stone alleyways and spectacular squares, it still contains architectural treasures belonging to times gone by. In fact, the Museum Network consists of a rich itinerary that winds its way through the entire city. We start with the Conservatory of Santa Chiara, a building founded in the 13th century, inside which you can still admire pictorial masterpieces by Ludovico Cardi, known as Cigoli, and the Cross by Deodato Orlandi.

Continuing our journey through art, we come to the Accademia degli Euteleti, at Palazzo Migliorati. Ancient texts are kept here, as well as the funeral mask of Napoleon Bonaparte and mementos belonging to the noble family. Then there is the Loretino Oratory, which dates back to the 13th century and is embellished with a marvelous wooden altar painted by Francesco Lanfranchi, known as Spillo. You will be left speechless as you look at the frescoes, above it, of the Sala delle sette Virtù (Room of the Seven Virtues), currently home to the city hall.

Our tour ends with the Diocesan Museum and the Rocca, the undisputed protagonist of the entire area and evidence of the passage of Frederick II of Swabia. Beyond the historical and cultural aspect, there are other good reasons to visit San Miniato. I will try to summarize them all in 5 points:

There are a total of 32 municipalities in Tuscany in which the renowned white truffle emerged, a culinary excellence that has become the symbol of the San Miniato Hills. The Tuber Magnum Pico has been sought and cared for by our truffle hunters for more than a century: these gems with their unmistakable flavor and fragrance hide among the oaks, lindens and willow trees. The San Miniato National Market Exhibition is held every year to celebrate this "fruit" and is a showcase that also attracts enthusiasts from foreign countries.

Truffles and much more in San Miniato: its wines, extra virgin olive oil, cured meats and many other specialties will brighten your vacation. Unmistakable local flavors, top quality ingredients and experienced artisans create exceptional products, some of which even boast Slow Food presidium recognition. A City of Flavors and also a Slow City: in this hectic, busy and fast-paced society of ours, San Miniato has decided to applaud slowness and promote a more responsible lifestyle that cherishes the traditions and authenticity of the territory, without giving up the benefits of technological development.

There has always been a link between theater, entertainment and San Miniato. In fact, in 1947, the Istituto del Dramma Popolare (Popular Drama Institute) was founded and a new play with a religious theme is staged here every year. In addition, the regular events include Prima del Teatro (Before the Theater), La Luna è Azzurra (The Moon is Blue) and l'Estate di San Martino (Summer of St. Martin). Lastly, let us also mention the Paolo and Vittorio Taviani Study Center, established to enhance the value of cinema and more, dedicated to the two famous film directors born in San Miniato.

From Altopascio to Gambassi Terme via San Miniato (stages 29 and 30), the Via Francigena route has been crossing this territory since medieval times, soon becoming one of the favorite roads of pilgrims traveling to Rome. Walkers, kings and princes have ventured along this ancient main road in the pursuit of spirituality. In addition to the historic center of the city, the itinerary also touches on the village of San Genesio, the very place where Archbishop Sigeric also stopped on his way back to Canterbury. Today, the area is an important archeological site in Tuscany.
