Summer and children, a perfect combination? Yes, as long as there are events and places to take them, despite the hot weather, even in the month of August. In fact, this month is traditionally devoted to vacations, with a general drop in activity and lots of places are closed...
Nevertheless, for families on holiday in our territory and for those who live here, there are plenty of tempting, fun, exciting things to do around Florence: all waiting to be discovered!
So, here are some ideas, in and around the city, keeping in mind the golden rules of summer, particularly important for children: no physical activity in the hottest hours, in the middle of the day, drink plenty of water and choose a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
Opposite the Medicean Park of Pratolino, located in a forest, you’ll find the Il Gigante Adventure Park. It gets its name, which means Giant, from the colossal statue in the Medicean Park, where we suggest you take a walk, because it is beautiful, full of history and greenery, and it is free.
In the Adventure Park, the trees become the ideal setting for exploring and overcoming your fears. Among the rope bridges and paths suspended at a height of 20 meters, it is impossible not to have fun.
The park is in the municipality of Vaglia along the Via Bolognese and it is open throughout the entire month of August.
A space filled with greenery and water that children (and also adults!) appreciate in the summer, thanks to the open air swimming pool and the inflatable games area, is Parco dei Renai, a park just behind the Arno River in the municipality of Signa.
We have often talked about it, as it is a beautiful natural resource easy to get to from Florence or from Lastra a Signa, Campi Bisenzio and municipalities in the Florence area. The park has a lot to offer. As well as what we have described here, you can also go to the beach, swim in the lake, go sailing... Why not give it a try!
On the hills of Fiesole lies an unexpected nature reserve that the children will love: Fattoria di Maiano, with its Botanical Garden. It is a villa with rural annexes, in a natural setting of great beauty and next to the quarries where pietra forte and pietra serena sandstone were extracted in Maiano, processed and literally used to “build” the city of Florence.
It is an immense green space, surrounded by beautiful hilly landscapes, where you can run, walk, have picnics or relax on the banks of a romantic artificial lake. There is also the farm space, with lots of animals and the possibility to stop for a snack.
Fairy tales & snack at the Ultravox in Florence. What is the Ultravox? A space in Parco delle Cascine, the biggest public park in the city running along the Arno River, very popular with the people of Florence and a place where summer events are held.
The free initiatives for children, scheduled at 6.30 pm every Wednesday in August, include storytelling, of traditional fables, followed by a snack.
It is a simple but very welcome event, because cities are often empty in August, with few people or things to do.
Lastly, we take you to Calenzano and the Calenzano Estate program with the Cirk Fantastik, presenting two different shows, on August 27 and 28, in their own style: contemporary circus, clowning, comedy routines and laughter.
Don’t imagine animals, because the Cirk Fantastik provides shows made up of movements, acrobatics, sweetness and funny antics. It is very poetic, rich in virtuosity and original costumes. At Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Calenzano, at 9.15 pm.
