When to go

First of all, it is important to choose the right time of year: the island has a lot to offer in any season, but if you love the sea and beach life, the summer months are the best. For those who want to travel in August, it is advisable to book your trip, accommodation and excursions well in advance because this is the busiest period.

June and July may be the best months for enjoying the tranquility of the island as well, while May and September treat you to incredible colors, lush nature and comfortable temperatures.

Ferry

Several ferries can be taken from Piombino to the island.
There are four companies that operate the route:

  • Moby and Toremar connect Piombino to Portoferraio and Cavo; Toremar also reaches Rio Marina.
    Estimated travel time to the Island of Elba is 1 hour to Portoferraio, 30 minutes to Cavo and 45 minutes to Rio Marina.
  • Blu Navy: this company connects Piombino to Portoferraio. Travel time is 1 hour.
  • Corsica Sardinia Ferries: connect Piombino to Portoferraio only during the summer season - May to September - and the crossing takes 45 minutes.

There are special offers for those traveling in groups, on day trips or with flexible dates. Refer to the official websites of the various companies to stay up-to-date on various promotions.

Plane

There are two air connections from Germany with Rhein Neckar Air: planes come from Mannheim and Friedrichshafen.

Train

For those traveling by train, you need to get to the Campiglia Marittima station - Genoa-Rome route - and from there to the Piombino Marittima station. 
There are frequent shuttles connecting the station and the port of Piombino.

Bus

It is possible to get to the port of Piombino using connections handled by various operators. There are direct routes from Milan and Florence (from July to September).
