The Etruscan Coast in the off season

Beyond the summer: itineraries and experiences by the sea all year round

Thanks to its almost always mild temperatures, the Etruscan Coast includes a large and varied territory to experience even in the off season. From Rosignano Marittimo to Piombino, the coast becomes less crowded and the inland villages offer multiple opportunities for a day trip or a weekend getaway from the city.

When the summer heat gives way to the first wind of fall and the days become shorter, it is the ideal time to spend a vacation in total tranquility. The beaches welcome those who enjoy long walks or a quick dip in the sea, while the deep blue sky is tinged with shades of red at sunset, treating you to a striking view of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

In the seaside locations, the pace slows down and there is more time to stop and talk with the residents, discovering stories and anecdotes about the area or stop off at a seafront restaurant. A few miles from the coast, little aperitif bars and fine wine cellars await you for tastings in the maritime hills with a mixture of traditional flavors. Between the taste trails in Val di Cornia, activities in nature and visits to cultural sites, your off-season vacation will be unforgettable!

Outdoor sports and activities

Lovers of sports and outdoor experiences will find the Parks and Nature Reserves of the Etruscan Coast to be the ideal environment for enjoying  walking, horseback riding and biking itineraries or for admiring the animal and plant life in the protected areas. There are plenty of circuits suitable for exercising on road bikes, including uphill bends and long stretches of coastline.

The never-too-cold climate also makes it possible to exercise all year round on your mountain bike: trails through the woods that climb to the inland high grounds, offering striking views towards the coast or overlooking the villages nestled in the green Mediterranean scrub. For trekking enthusiasts, there are excursions with various levels and durations, with breathtaking views of the sea from the promontory of Piombino to the Quercetano Bay.

Culture and relaxation

Theme museums, archeological parks, events and cultural activities for adults and children make this area of Tuscany by the sea a "time machine" that travels from Etruscan times to the present day. The network of Val di Cornia Parks combines nature, culture and archeology with the offer of active visits, even during the off-season, on weekends.

In the coastal locations and in the hillside villages small museums, parish churches, fortresses and castles tell a story to be discovered at a slow pace. For a romantic weekend or a completely relaxing one, you cannot miss a trip to the thermal baths, from Thalassotherapy at Marina di Castagneto to the natural hot springs of Venturina Terme and Sassetta.
