Transport in Florence: how to get around

All the options: bus, tram, taxi, car sharing, bike sharing

In a relatively small city like Florence, walking is almost a way of life and certainly the best way to get around.
Easy to walk through from north to south and from east to west, the Renaissance capital has a largely pedestrianized historic center, so walking is a pleasant option for visitors who want to see the splendid tourist attractions.

However, Florence also has a good transport network, with several options that make it easy to reach even the places that are harder to get to on foot.

The bus company that operates in Florence and throughout Tuscany is called at - autolinee toscane.
A single ticket can be bought on board by tapping with credit cards, smartphones and smartwatches of the Mastercard, Visa and American Express circuits. For more tickets, you can download the "at bus" app and select the desired number of tickets.
Tickets can also be purchased in the traditional way at coffee shop/tobacconists, some newsstands, automatic ticket machines and authorized retailers.
For Italian SIMs, purchase by SMS is also valid.
If the driver has not run out of tickets, they can also be purchased on board at an increased price.
Tickets purchased in advance cost 1.70 euro, those sold on board 3.00 euro and those via SMS 2.00 euro (to which the cost of the SMS should be added). They all last 90 minutes from the time of validation.

In terms of time, the Tramway is the newest addition to the Florentine public transport network.
The T1 line connects Villa Costanza (Scandicci) to Careggi Hospital, with stops at Parco delle Cascine, Santa Maria Novella central train station and Fortezza da Basso (site of numerous trade fairs).
The T2 line connects Santa Maria Novella station with Florence Airport (Peretola).

The ticket is the same as the bus ticket and can be purchased from the same retailers, via SMS, online and at ticket machines installed at each stop or on board with contactless payment.

There are two companies in Florence that provide Taxi service: Taxi4242 and Taxi4390.
Taxi rides have a minimum departure charge and then a fare that depends on time and distance, with possible surcharges (at night, holidays, baggage).
There are then a series of set fares. For example, the cost of a trip to/from Florence airport is 28 euro (plus surcharges) on weekdays, 32 euro in at night and 30 euro on holidays and Sundays.
Taxi4390 also offers a coupon from the city center to the airport - and vice versa - for 44 euro.

Taxis are stationed in dedicated car parks located throughout the city (train stations, Piazza Duomo, Piazza Repubblica, Piazzale Michelangelo and others) and can also be requested and booked by phone, SMS/chat, App and email.

Car sharing

Car sharing is a service that allows people to rent a car at any time and for a relatively short time, paying foractual use only, which depends on the time and distance traveled.
Car sharing vehicles, both gasoline and electric, are allowed to be driven within the historic center, even at times when the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) is active.
It is a good option for those who wish to visit places outside the city that are not served by the bus service.

In Florence, car sharing is currently operated by Enjoy, which also provides daily or monthly subscription plans.

Bike sharing

Bike sharing is becoming an increasingly popular and much-appreciated transport option.
It's a great way to travel quickly and in an environmentally-friendly way, while getting some exercise at the same time!

In Florence, the service is operated by RideMovi, via App and QR Code to be scanned on the vehicle.
Traditional bicycles and electric (power -assisted) vehicles are available. Bikes can be found almost everywhere in the city and are repositioned daily at strategic locations. There are single ride rates (1.25euro/20 minutes for traditional bikes; 0.30 euro/minute for e-bikes plus 1 euro for unlocking), as well as different types of packages.

There are also bicycle rental services in the city. Just search for "bike rentals" online and choose the option that best suits your needs!

Electric scooters have recently been added to the types of shared vehicles available in Florence.
The service is provided by BIT Mobility and is managed via App.
