Viareggio, a strolled paved with the sea, shopping and flavors

Discovering the city of Carnevale

Strolling the entire length of Viareggio’s waterfront will make you fall in love with this seaside city. So famous is this destination that it has been given the title of “Capital of Versilia,” the historical-geographical coastal region that encompasses this city that is also the birthplace of many illustrious Italians. “La Passeggiata,” as the people of Viareggio call their promenade, is a flourish of Art Nouveau and Deco architecture, so much so that it is now the most monumental and artistically valuable area of the city. One prominent example of this type of architecture is the celebrated Café Margherita.

But Viareggio is not only about the sea. Indeed, the city is likely even better known for its Carnevale. Going to Carnival—where everyone can be whatever they want and dress up as whomever they want—is a one-of-a-kind experience. But there are some things to bear in mind. Held along the promenade every Sunday are the “Corsi,” the parades of giant animated papier-mâché floats depicting allegories and funny mockeries of famous people. If you are keen to see the floats, you can take a tour of the newly built Cittadella del Carnevale, where for a whole year, master crafters bring the spectacular papier-mâché creations to life.

At the far end of the Passeggiata arises the Darsena which, in addition to being home to the most popular Carnival district, also serves as a parking area for luxury yachts. Take a walk among the moored boats if you just want a look. You won’t be hard pressed to glimpse some well-known faces. And if you prefer to get on board instead, rent a boat yourself!

Whatever you do, leave time to savor the dishes served in the many seafood restaurants in Viareggio. If you prefer, you can even dine at one of the bathing establishments along the Passeggiata.
