We normally associate going to the beach with summer, when we can sunbathe and swim when the weather is hot. But if you miss the sound of waves and sand, you will certainly be satisfied along the Tuscan coast, enjoying pretty winter views.
Here are some tips on the most striking locations:
One of the first beaches we recommend for a winter stroll in Tuscany is Cinquale. This hamlet is in the municipality of Montignoso, along the Apuan Riviera, where the mountains “fall” into the sea.
Along the coast of Versilia, Viareggio seems specifically made for taking long walks accompanied by the gentle sound of the sea. Among the stores and narrow streets, you can breathe in the salty air and savor some excellent seafood dishes even in winter.
And what about the Etruscan Coast? This strip of land is touched by waves that lap some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches. For this reason, we recommend spending a winter afternoon in the Marina di Cecina, among sand dunes and a centuries-old pine forest—also suitable for sports lovers, if you feel like going for a ride by bicycle or on horseback.
The lighthouse and the blue sea: Castiglione della Pescaia is a renowned seaside resort in the heart of northern Maremma. The town is surrounded by hills and pine forests, including the magnificent Pineta del Tombolo.
We conclude our tips for winter with the city of Livorno, a location that does not need too much of a preamble. The Terrazza Mascagni, the Fortezza Vecchia, the “Venezia” district ... these are just a few monuments and sites of interest to admire right by the sea. And to end the day, nothing could be better than a plate of steaming Cacciucco—the delectable seafood soup!
