Along the Via Francigena in the Apuan Riviera

From the coast to the hills where Candia wine is produced, following an ancient pilgrimage route

This itinerary touches on the protected area of Lake Porta and the historic towns of Massa and Avenza, immersing visitors in a setting rich in history and nature. In addition to the scenic and artistic beauty, the route offers the opportunity to savor the authentic flavors of the local cuisine, with its varying nuances, perhaps taking a break in one of Candia’s many wineries.

Your cycling adventure begins on the bustling waterfront of Marina di Massa. Begin by pedaling north, following the coast with the blue Tyrrhenian Sea accompanying you on your left until reaching Marina di Carrara.

Here, turn right and leave the coast to enter the hinterland. The road leads to Sant’Antonio, where you take the Via Francigena by bicycle, in the direction of Bonascola. This ancient route guides you through hilly landscapes and quaint villages until reaching Massa. Along the way, catch a glimpse of the picturesque terraces at the foot of the Apuan Alps where the “wine of heroes” is produced and visit farms and wineries where you can taste traditional Apuan dishes such as Tordelli, marinated codfish or the famous Lardo di Colonnata.

In Massa, take a well-deserved refreshment break and admire the beauty of the old town. Resume your journey, following the route of the Via Francigena for a few more miles before abandoning this stretch to return towards the sea.

The route takes you past the Lake Porta Nature Oasis, a protected area of great environmental value. Continue along the banks of the Versilia River, the only short but scenic stretch on a dirt road (at 0.75 miles or 1.2 kilometers), which will bring you back to the waterfront.

Here, turn right and pedal along the coast, with the sea once again by your side, until getting back to your starting point in Marina di Massa.
