Among hills, castles and water on the Apuan Riviera

From Marina di Massa to Castello Aghinolfi via San Carlo Terme

Set off from Piazza Bad Kissingen in Marina di Massa for this loop ride that offers a complete cycling experience in a relatively small area.

After reaching the town of Massa, pedaling along the straight stretch of Viale Roma, begin the climb that leads to San Carlo Terme and Tombara, until you reach 1680 feet (512 meters) in altitude. This is the “Cima Coppi” (as Italians like to refer to the highest peak) of the ride. Start your descent by passing through the picturesque villages of Cerreto and Sant’Eustachio, located in the hills above Montignoso.

Once reaching Montignoso, take a right from the valley floor and head downhill for just over half a mile (or one kilometer) until heading left toward Fortezza Aghinolfi. The trail starts climbing again and, once you reach the castle, you will be able to enjoy a panorama with spectacular views of the sea.

The road continues downhill until reaching Ripa, where you’ll take a right until reaching the sea then heading up along the coast to your starting point in Marina di Massa.

This route is ideal for year-round travel and is notable for its truly scenic views. Despite being a small route, it nonetheless embodies all the typical features of a longer and more challenging ride.

The route can even be taken in both directions.
